TV Review: The Split Series 1 / The Good Fight Series 2

If female-fronted lawyer shows are your bag (and why wouldn’t they be!), the twin joys of The Split and The Good Fight have marvellous to behold

“Kill all the lawyers”

If I’m completely honest, Abi Morgan’s The Split did leave me a tad disappointed as it veered away from its legal beginnings to something considerably more soapy over its six episodes. The personal lives of the Defoe clan well and truly took over at the expense of any of the cases they were looking after and even if that family includes Nicola Walker, Annabel Scholey and Deborah Findlay, it’s still a bit of a shame that it ended up so schlocky. Album Review: Finding Neverland (2015 Original Broadway Cast Recording)

“But what I say is true
You’ll be amazed”

I saw, and rather liked, the musical of Finding Neverland when it premiered in Leicester back in 2012 but given the extreme redevelopment it underwent thanks to Harvey Weinstein’s involvement, the show that opened on Broadway in 2015 was substantially different. A new bookwriter (James Graham), a new lyricist (Eliot Kennedy) and a new composer (Gary Barlow) were brought onboard for a near complete overhaul.

And I have to admit to having had the Original Broadway Cast Recording on my to-listen-to list ever since it was released, the involvement of Mr Barlow not having the immediate attraction that it would to, say, my elder sister ;-). But more fool me, for having given it a spin, I tumbled instantly for its charms, hitting the replay button on several of the songs and declaring it one of my most favourite cast albums I’ve listened to this year. Not-really-a-CD Review: Tuck Everlasting (2016 Original Broadway Cast)

“A man who is fondest of suits that are jaundiced”

Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen’s musical The Burnt Part Boys is coming over to the Park Theatre later this year but their latest venture Tuck Everlasting was one of the Spring’s biggest crash and burn stories on Broadway, scarcely making two months. Based on a 1975 US children’s novel by Natalie Babbitt, it’s a horrendously twee vat of corn syrup that I have to admit I struggled to listen the minimum two times that I give cast recordings. And to be honest, I can’t think of anything constructive to say about it so I’m going to leave it there!
